As an Association of Master Upholsterer and Soft Furnishers (AMUSF) Approved Training Centre, Tresithick Upholstery is a provider of the AMUSF Accredited Craft Certificate courses.
The Certificate can be studied at 3 different levels from 1 to 3. This factsheet concentrates on Level 2 as this is the most common entry level for those wishing to learn the craft. Please enquire for information regarding Level 1 and 3.
The Craft Certificate Level 2 aims to equip the student with the skills necessary to carry out work on the majority of upholstered items, along with the confidence to build on their knowledge of the craft independently.
It is a natural stepping stone to the Level 3 course which can also be undertaken at the Tresithick Upholstery Training Centre. The level 3 course follows successful completion of level 2 and further equips the student with the necessary skills with which to either enter the industry or start their own business.
At each level the course is designed to show progression and to consolidate the practical techniques learnt.
Course Length. A minimum of 210 hrs to be completed within 12 months.
The course is designed to be flexible so as to allow the student to complete the syllabus in (individually) achievable time periods commensurate with their availability. Given the intensity of the course, it is advisable to avoid, in effect, doing a full-time, 6-week course without any breaks.
Course Cost. £2250 + Admin and Registration Fee of £50:00. Upholstery materials are not included in the above course fees, but are charged for according to use during the course.
There are 3 main elements to the course that form the majority of the awarding marks as follows:
All elements must be completed in order to achieve the highest marks.
Over the duration of the course the student will complete a number of other projects as either exercise or actual pieces:
Upholstery of a Drop-in Seat using traditional methods and materials
Upholstery of a Stitched and Stuffed Chair without springs (traditional)
Upholstery of a Sprung Arm – exercise frame (traditional)
Upholstery of a Stool or headboard (modern) to be deep buttoned
Boxed Cushion cover with zip
A variety of skills are addressed on the course, and will be acquired directly through the experience of working on each piece of furniture. During the course the student is required to compile a portfolio in support of their practical work and this may include the following:
Sketching, colour coordination and scale drawings
A detailed list of materials used and costings for each item of furniture.
A description of the processes involved including references to the use
of tools, handling of materials, and health and safety awareness.
Photographic evidence - pictures should be taken at every stage of the
project to create a detailed photographic record of work involved from start
to finish.
A written description of each process.
An understanding of current Fire Regulations
Evidence, as appropriate, of machine sewing, pattern matching, colour
coordination and finishing.
This document will become an excellent reference tool for you as you continue with your upholstery.
